          Profile of Small borrowal accounts, 1975-2001

  • 'Small borrowal accounts' form a predominant segment, accounting for over 90 per cent of all borrowal accounts even though the cut off credit limit for classification of small borrowal accounts did undergo upward revision during 1975 to 2001.
  •  The share of small borrowal accounts (each with credit of Rs 10,000 or less) in outstanding credit rose from 9.2 per cent in June 1975 to 14.5 per cent by June 1983. Correspondingly, amount outstanding per account rose from Rs.1,482 in 1975 to Rs.2,149 in 1983 registering a growth of 45.0 per cent
  • Effective March 1999 when the cut-off point of credit limit for small borrowal accounts was raised to Rs. 2 lakh, their share in amount outstanding declined from 23.1 per cent as at the end of March 1999 to 19.7 per cent as at the end March 2001. The average amount per account, however, moved up from Rs.17,311 in March 1999 to Rs.21,067 in March 2001.
